This world of ours is noise on noise,
A crackling static that lurches from ear to ear.
Air brakes rumbling down a country highway.
Endless political pundits yammering on and on.
A lover's quarrel escaping through thin motel walls.
The clipped conversations of channels mindlessly changed
and the rhythmic hiss of a half-tuned bedstand radio.
Outside, the fluorescent hum of blinking hallway lights.
The electric buzz of an ice machine.
The thunk of a can of soda dropping free.
The night shift desk clerk sings a tuneless song, while
monotonous heads mouth nonsense on the muted lobby TV.
It's not silence we fear, but the sputtering thoughts
that gurgle upward when there's nothing left to say.
